send back the echo
“I beg of you to keep the matter of my deafness a profound secret to be confided to nobody, no matter whom…" - Ludwig van Beethoven 'send back the echo' is not an homage to the myth or legend of Beethoven. It is a journey inspired by a deaf musician. The composer's personal letters and memoirs reveal a human story of intense passion, fear and joy as he reconciled solitude and deafness with a deep love of nature and music. These confessions, interpreted and performed in British Sign Language by deaf actor Vilma Jackson, are accompanied by music from the film’s director & composer, Jasmin Kent Rodgman. Commissioned and performed by the multi-national ensemble United Strings of Europe, 'send back the echo' invites a moment of reflection on the alienation faced by the deaf community and people of colour within music, culture and the arts. Produced by Jasmin Kent Rodgman and Julian Azkoul. Generously supported by Arts Council England. Thanks to BBC Arts Culture in Quarantine. Ruby Hughes and the United Strings of Europe perform Golijov
Osvaldo Golijov Three Songs: 2. Lúa Descolorida The United Strings of Europe and soprano Ruby Hughes record Osvaldo Golijov's Three Songs for the ensemble's new album 'Renewal' (out on BIS Records in January 2022). Listen to the album: https://naxos.lnk.to/BIS-2549 Lúa Descolorida (Colourless Moon) by Rosalía de Castro (translated by Osvaldo Golijov) Moon, colorless like the color of pale gold: You see me here and I wouldn’t like you to see me from the heights above. Take me, silently, in your ray to the space of your journey. Star of the orphan souls, Moon, colorless: I know that you don’t illuminate sadness as sad as mine. Go and tell it to your master and tell him to take me to his place. But don’t tell him anything, Moon, colorless, because my fate won’t change here or in other worlds. If you know where Death has her dark mansion, Tell her to take my body and soul together To a place where I won’t be remembered, Neither in this world, nor in the heights above. Ruby Hughes, soprano Julian Azkoul, director United Strings of Europe Matthew Bennett, producer Dave Rowell, engineer Tom Gimson, videography and editing BIS Records Recorded in March 2021 at St Silas Church, London
